Cephalonia (or Kefallinia) is an island of contrasts. Spectacular mountain scenery, breathtaking coastline and quiet golden beaches all combined to provide visitors with a taste of paradise. The outstanding and tranquil natural beauty is complemented by the unique geological phenomena which are found in various places of the island. For one day excursions and sightseeing around the island, highly recommended places are:
South
Close to the new village of Skala, one may visit the abandoned old town of Skala, which was completely destroyed by the 1953 earthquake. Furthermore in the south, lies the Sission Monastery, a 17th century monastery said to have been founded by St Francis of Assisi.
Avithos beach and the tiny island of Dias with the ruins of the Castle of St. George, offering splendid views over the Livatho plain and towards Argostoli.

West
Pitani Bay on the north-west coast of the Paliki peninsula. Moreover, the ruins of the village of Farsa, where Louis de Bernieres was inspired to write "Captain Corelli's Mandolin". Also, not to be missed is the fishing harbour of Lixouri and the capital of the island, Argostoli.
North
Sami, a picturesque fishing harbour and the ancient city of Sami. Above Sami on a pine-clad hill stand the ruins of the acropolis of Cyatis. The secluded sandy beach of Anti-Samos Bay lies to the south east of Sami.
Assos peninsula, a small town with a beach and a Venetian fortress, built in 1593 AD. Assos is one of the island's prettiest ports, filled with waterfront mansions and tavernas. Finally, the Melissani cave is reached by a short boat ride.
Fiscardo, a 19th century neoclassical town and small harbour. Fantastic beaches can also be found in this area.

| Fiscardo is a colourful little port
on the north east tip of Cephalonia, 50 kilometres from Argostoli.
It is the only village to have survived the 1953 earthquake almost
unscathed, and the architecture of the Venetians is in rich evidence. The village waterfront plays host to whitewashed shops, balconies decorated with bright flowers, sleepy cafe bars, fruit sellers, fishing boats and visiting yachts, varied tavernas and small craft shops. The sheltered bay looks out towards the mountainous coastline of Ithaca. Daily ferries from Fiscardo visit the small port of Frikes in Ithaca and Vassiliki in Lefkas. Secluded beaches and coves, surrounded by cypress and olive trees, can be found on either side of Fiscardo Bay. From the port you can hire your own little motor boat to reach them. |
